Bulk Residential Item Collection
If you have bulk residential items that will not fit in your 96-gallon garbage can, you can prepay to schedule a curbside pickup. Accepted items are limited to those that can be picked up by two people. Items that will be accepted are listed in the section below.
Please note that pickup days may be impacted by winter weather. For more information contact Public Works by calling 701-355-1700 and selecting Option 3 from the automated menu.
- $25 PICK-UP SERVICE FEE (max 2 service fees) plus cost to dispose of item(s).
- Maximum 5 Items per Service Fee (max of 10 items).
- Disposal Fees for Bulk Item(s) listed below.
- Bulk items must be placed on the curb by 6:00 AM on bulk item collection day.
- Item Weight Limit: No heavier than 2 people can lift and carry.
- NO REFUNDS.
- Not Responsible for items dropped off at your property – *Contact PD – “Littering".
*If bulk items have been dropped off and left on your property, please get in touch with the Bismarck Police Department by calling 701-223-1212 for more information.
Bulk Item Collection: $25 Service Fee for up to 5 items, plus appropriate disposal fees. This is not an all inclusive list.

A survey was available for the public to engage with in August and September 2024. More than 3,000 survey responses were collected. The results from the survey were as follows:

- Every other week - 8% (235 of 3,049 responses)
- Once a month - 14% (419 of 3,049 responses)
- Every few months - 42% (1,280 of 3,049 responses)
- Never - 32% (968 of 3,049 responses)
- Should folks who place extras beside their 96-gallon can for collection pay more than those who do not?
- Yes - 54% (1,624 of 3,011 responses)
- No - 46% (1,387 of 3,011 responses)
- When you place extras beside your 96-gallon can, what type of trash is it most often?
- Grass - 17% (454 of 2,622 responses)
- Extra household garbage - 28% (726 of 2,622 responses)
- Bulky household items that don't fit in a can - 55% (1,442 of 2,622 responses)
- How do you primarily dispose of your grass clippings?
- Mulch, so there is no need to dispose of them - 34% (1,009 of 2,950 responses responses)
- Recycle them at the city grass collection dumpster - 49% (1,457 of 2,950 responses)
- Place them at the curb, beside my 96-gallon can for collection - 9% (253 of 2,950 responses)
- Place them in my 96-gallon can for regular waste collection - 8% (231 of 2,950 responses)
- If you were given the following choices for garbage collection, which one would you choose?
- Continue to take extras, by sending a second rear load truck with a driver and collector to pick up extras. (Note: This option is expected to double your current garbage rates.) - 10% (308 of 2,994 responses)
- No longer accept extras. Residents could take any extra trash to the landfill for a fee. (Note: This option is expected to keep the garbage rates about where they are at today.) - 5% (162 of 2,994 responses)
- No longer accept extras. Residents could purchase a special bag from Public Works and set the bag beside the can. The driver would then dump the can, get out of the truck, and place the bag in the can and dump a second time. (Note: This option is expected to keep the garbage rates about where they are at today.) - 8% (241 of 2,994 responses)
- No longer accept extras. Residents could pay for a second can if they want/need one. The can may be available at a reduced rate. (Note: This option is expected to keep the garbage rates about where they are at today.) - 17% (521 of 2,994 responses)
- Implement options B, C & D. (Note: This option is expected to keep garbage rates about where they are at today, while giving residents options to dispose of extra garbage. Households that produce more garbage would pay more for disposal.) - 59% (1,762 of 2,994 responses)
- If the City offered to pick up bulky items such as a mattress, couch or appliances for an additional fee, would you utilize this type of service?
