[ARCHIVED] Movement Maze: Interactive Art Inspires Community Wellness

Movement Maze Flyer showcasing art in downtown Bismarck

Sidewalks in downtown Bismarck are being transformed into colorful, interactive art installations as part of a new initiative aimed at encouraging physical activity, community connection and beautifying public spaces.

The “Movement Maze” project combines public art with health promotion, featuring walkable designs intended to inspire play, conversation and more active lifestyles. The installations are being placed at key locations, and residents are encouraged to explore and engage with them as they appear.

Three locations are part of the initial rollout:

The sidewalk near Brick Oven Bakery, from Fourth Street to Broadway Avenue, is already complete and drawing attention from pedestrians.

A second maze will be located on the north side of the Bismarck Veterans Memorial Library on Avenue B, next to the existing labyrinth.

A third maze is planned for installation at the corner of Fifth Street and Broadway Avenue.

“Movement Mazes invite all ages to move more, laugh more and connect with one another — all while reimagining public space,” said Katie Johnke, RDN, LRD, Nutrition and Health Promotion Coordinator. “It’s art you can walk on, and health you can build into your daily routine.”
