[ARCHIVED] Citizen Input Open House May 9 About Possible Development of Bicycle Lanes

The City of Bismarck is interested in obtaining citizen input related to the development of a bicycle lane demonstration project. An open house and citizen input meeting will be held May 9, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. at the Bismarck Public Library, Room B, 515 North Fifth Street, Bismarck. “We want to hear from citizens and engage them more fully in the planning process,” said Commissioner Mike Seminary. “One of the ways we plan to reach citizens in addition to the public input meeting is through the active use of the City web site and social media – both to inform and gain feedback from the community.” If you are unable to attend the citizen input open house you can get more information, provide input, and take a brief survey on-line Bicycle Lane Survey. City Facebook and Twitter links can be found on the City's homepage.

The development of a bicycle lane demonstration project is part of Complete Streets – an approach to road systems that provide safe, convenient access for all users. The City of Bismarck has identified a variety of possible locations for the implementation of a bicycle lane demonstration project. The selected location will be influenced by community input and the availability of funding to implement the project.

A bicycle lane is a portion of a roadway designated by striping, for the use of bicycles. The intent of the demonstration project is to encourage bicycling in the established parts of the community, as well as, to gauge interest in bicycle lanes.

Future bicycle lane facilities may be phased in over time based on the success of the demonstration project. The City of Bismarck is interested in creating a more diversified transportation system. Bicycle lanes are one element the City of Bismarck is interested in exploring to provide added transportation choices to residents and visitors of the community.
