[ARCHIVED] Residents are asked to make fire safety a priority during dry conditions

With the unusually hot and dry weather that we have been experiencing, the Bismarck Fire Department would like to encourage the citizens of Bismarck to make fire safety a priority with any type of outdoor cooking device, smoking materials and recreational fires.  Persons are also reminded that the use of fireworks is illegal within the City of Bismarck except for public displays which require a permit.

Recreational fires, to include fire pits, portable outdoor fireplaces and chimeneas, are permitted when in compliance with fire code requirements.  They are not to exceed a size of three feet in diameter and two feet in height. They must be located at least 15 feet from any combustible materials or structures, and must use dry, well-seasoned wood.  Do not burn garbage, leaves or any products that will produce offensive smoke or odor.  A nearby water hose is recommended when burning and for dousing the fire after use to ensure the ashes are cool.

Smoking materials should be disposed of properly in an approved noncombustible receptacle. Never flick a cigarette butt onto the ground, out the window of a vehicle, into a trash can or other combustible type receptacle.

When using charcoal and wood grills at home or in local parks never leave them unattended. When done ensure the ashes are completely extinguished with water prior to disposal.

Extreme caution should be used when using any type of cooking device or open flame when adjacent to dry vegetation or combustible materials.
