Sandbag removal and disposal will NOT occur from September 7 to September 12, 2011, so that residents and visitors may travel unhindered during the traditional community garage sale weekend that typically follows the Labor Day holiday.

Schools located within the various zones shall have sandbags picked up at hours when the schools are closed (late in the day or on weekends). No sandbags shall be placed on the side of the street in front of the schools in any school zone.

Residents in each zone will be notified by letter seven days in advance of when they may place sandbags in the street. Residents are asked NOT to place sandbags on the street until they are notified by letter AND only when your street is marked with orange cones.

Zones are numbered and WILL NOT be collected in numeric order, but rather in the order of priority. Prioritization is based upon the areas that are at the least risk of street flooding and river flooding.

• DO NOT block storm water inlets, fire hydrants or mailboxes. Keep curb and gutters clear to allow storm water to reach the inlets.

• Place sandbags a minimum of 18 inches away from the curb and no further than 10 feet from the curb with a maximum height of three (3) feet (see attached diagram).

• Sand from broken sandbags may be placed in the street for collection. To avoid street flooding place the sand a minimum of 18 inches away from the curb and no further than 10 feet from the curb with a maximum height of three (3) feet.

• ONLY SANDBAGS may be placed in the designated areas marked by orange cones. No debris may be placed on the street for pickup. Flood related debris will be accepted at the Bismarck City Landfill during regular business hours from 8 am – 6 pm, Monday – Friday; 8 am – 4 pm Saturday.

• NO street parking will be allowed once the cones are placed in the sandbag collection area. Vehicles parked in no parking areas will be towed.

• A flag person will be posted at each work area for control of pedestrian and vehicular traffic during collection.

Citizens are reminded to continue protecting their property and are advised not to take any sandbags down until they are notified. Residents will be notified when it is safe for them to remove protective measures.
