[ARCHIVED] Corps Reminds Public of Rules, Regulations Governing Federal Shoreline Property

The Riverdale, N.D. office of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is reminding the public of its rules and regulations governing federal shoreline property. “We want the public to enjoy Lake Sakakawea and the Missouri River system. However, there are regulations that must be observed,” according to Todd Lindquist, Operations Manager. Violation of the rules and regulations carry a fine of not more than $5,000, or imprisonment for not more than 6 months, or both.

The public is not allowed to operate or park vehicles off authorized roadways, or operate any vehicle in a careless manner so as to endanger any person or property. Camping is permitted only in designated recreation areas. The Corps does not allow camping in these areas for the purpose of maintaining the same as a full- or part-time residence. It is a violation to bring onto a project any household or commercial garbage. The owner of any garbage is responsible for proper disposal. Personal property of any kind should not be abandoned, stored or left unattended upon Corps land or waters.

It is also unlawful to spill, pump, discharge or dispose of contaminants, pollutants or other wastes onto Corps land or into project waters. Contaminants and pollutants include human or animal waste, petroleum, industrial, and commercial products and by-products. It is also unlawful to destroy, deface or remove public property including facilities, natural formations and historical and archaeological features.
