[ARCHIVED] BBPH Celebrates Our Community with Bismarck’s Complete Streets Initiative

Bismarck Burleigh Public Health Celebrates Our Community during National Public Health Week by highlighting Bismarck’s Complete Streets Initiative. Complete Streets are road systems that provide safe, convenient access for all users including motorists, bicyclists, transit operators and users, and pedestrians of all ages and abilities. Complete Streets are achieved by changing the project development process to routinely plan for, design, build, and maintain the necessary infrastructure to encourage safe and convenient walking, bicycling, and transit use.

A recent study funded by the National Institutes of Health found those who lived in walkable neighborhoods got 30 to 45 minutes more exercise each week than those living in low-walkable areas. Complete streets foster strong communities and play an important role in livable communities, where all people – regardless of age, ability or mode of transportation – feel safe and welcome on the roadways. To learn more about the new Bismarck Complete Streets community initiative please attend the Bismarck Complete Streets Community Forum, April 22, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., at the Sertoma Community Room, Sertoma Park or call Bismarck Community Development at 701-355-1840.
