Central Dakota Communications LogoCentral Dakota Communications Center (CenCom) is encouraging CodeRED emergency alert system subscribers in Bismarck, Mandan, and Burleigh County to update their passwords following a recent cyberattack on a previously used platform.

CenCom has recently transitioned to a new CodeRED platform, which was not affected by the breach. While this new platform is fully operational and secure, users are encouraged to take precautionary steps to protect their personal information.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we recommend changing your CodeRED password—especially if you’ve used the same password for other accounts,” said CenCom Director Mike Dannenfelzer. “Using a unique password for each service is one of the simplest ways to protect your personal information from hackers.”

CodeRED subscriber information that may have been affected:

  • Name
  • Phone numbers
  • Email addresses
  • Mailing addresses
  • Passwords used to create CodeRED profiles

No highly sensitive personal information – such as Social Security numbers or financial data – is stored in the CodeRED system. CenCom also advises users to remain vigilant for phishing attempts or suspicious messages referencing CodeRED.

While FEMA works to resolve issues impacting Integrated Public Alert and Warning Systems (IPAWS) alerts, these alerts may be received from alternate systems as needed in the short term. Residents will continue to receive National Weather Service Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs). To ensure continued timely alerts, residents should:

  • Enable WEAs on their mobile devices
  • Maintain multiple ways to receive warnings (NOAA Weather Radio, local news, official city and county social media accounts)
  • Update any passwords associated with CodeRED system
