BISMARCK, ND—The Bismarck Fire Department responded to a fire at a commercial building on the south side of town on Monday night.

At approximately 8:42 PM on March 17th, 2025, the Bismarck Fire Department received a call for a structure fire at a commercial building in the 2500 block of Lockheed Drive.  Bismarck Fire crews were dispatched to the scene.

Firefighters arrived on the scene at 8:48 PM to find a commercial building with smoke coming from an open door. Firefighters entered the structure through the open walk-in door. Once inside, they found heavy smoke conditions throughout the building. Fire crews located an area on the second floor where the building fire sprinkler system had activated and put out a fire. Additional fire crews searched the structure and confirmed that everyone was evacuated. Overhaul was conducted to find and extinguish any smoldering materials and smoke was vented from the structure.

No injuries were reported to the onsite worker or firefighters.

The fire damage was contained to the room of origin, while there was smoke damage throughout the rest of the structure. A fire investigation was conducted, and the cause was determined to be accidental.

In this instance, the building fire sprinkler system is credited with automatically extinguishing the fire and minimizing fire damage and potential loss. Per the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in buildings with a fire sprinkler system installed, 97% of fires are contained to the room where they started, and damage from a fire can be reduced by as much as 90%.
