The rail crossing at the 100 block of Airport Road which had been closed due to a train derailment is now open.
On March 18th at 4:48 AM Bismarck Police responded to a train derailment at 100 block South Airport Road. The train had stopped, blocking Airport Road. Approximately 300 feet east of the crossing there were numerous railcars off the track. Several had tipped over entirely, spilling their contents of coal. The fire department was notified. Public Works blocked off Airport Road at the crossing. A van belonging to Guardian Lock and Safe was damaged. Coal had fallen across the front of the van. Damage estimated at $500. The train was coming from Mandan and hauling coal. The conductor reports there were approximately 20-30 cars behind the engine at the time of the incident. Approximately 10-15 were involved in the derailment. BNSF was on the scene.
