The holidays are upon us with families and friends getting together to remember all the things to be thankful for this past year. Big meals will be on the agenda so we have some kitchen safety tips we would like to share. We would like you to have a wonderful and safe holiday season.
The National Fire Protection Agency statistics show 1 in 8 homes had a cooking related fire this past year. Here are some tips to follow to make your cooking experience a good one:
• Watch what you heat! Unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires.
• Keep things that can catch fire away from cooking appliances. (Pot holders, dishtowels paper or plastic). • Know what to do if you have a cooking fire.
• Keep children out of the cooking area.• Turn pot handles inward to prevent small children from grabbing handles.
• Have a working fire extinguisher handy. • Make sure to have working smoke detectors.
• Make sure to use the cooking appliances properly. (Stoves, microwaves, grills and especially turkey fryers).
Cooking safety tips specifically for turkey fryers: • Turkey fryers should always be used outside away from buildings and others things that may burn.
• Turkey fryers should be used on flat surfaces. • Make sure your turkey is completely thawed or it may cause a spill over. (24 hours of thawing is recommended for every 5 lbs. of turkey).
• Do not over fill or over heat the turkey fryer with oil. Most models do not have thermostat.• Remember the fryer can remain dangerously hot for hours after use.
