  1. Seniors Speak Writing Workshop

    April 27, 2017, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM @ Bismarck Veterans Memorial Public Library Meeting Room A

    This is a free workshop open to all who are interested in writing their stories (designed for seniors 50+ but all ages are welcome). Presenter Debra Marquart will discuss what makes good writing, lead participants through writing prompts, and share where to find publishing outlets. This workshop is sponsored by the ND Humanities Council and the Friends of the Bismarck Public Library. Debra Marquart is the author of five books including Small Buried Things: Poems and The Horizontal World: Growing Up Wild in the Middle of Nowhere, which won the PEN USA Nonfiction Award and Elle Magazine’s “Elle Lettres” Award. She directs the MFA Program in Creative Writing and Environment at Iowa State University and serves as the Senior Editor of Flyway: Journal of Writing & Environment.

  2. An Evening with ND Author Debra Marquart

    Join North Dakota author Debra Marquart for a reading and discussion of her work. Marquart is the author of five books including, Small Buried Things: Poems (2015) and a co-edited anthology of experimental writing, Nothing to Declare: A Guide to the Prose Sequence (2016). She teaches nonfiction in the Stonecoast MFA program at the University of Southern Maine, and directs the MFA Program in Creative Writing and Environment at Iowa State University. The senior editor of Flyway: Journal of Writing & Environment, Marquart has delivered over 250 invited readings and keynotes at universities and conferences from New York and Washington to Greece and Ireland. Her work has been featured on three NPR programs—Morning Edition, The Writer’s Almanac, and On Point—and the BBC. She is the recipient of over 50 grants and awards including an NEA Fellowship and a PEN USA Nonfiction Award. Her environmental poem, “Lament,” was recently honored by inclusion in Best American Poetry 2016.

    This story time is for children held in caregiver laps for books, songs, and puppets. Through this story time interaction, your baby will develop language and social skills. Plus, story time fosters a close emotional relationship between you and your baby. Babies learn to associate books with the pleasure of being with parents, and this pleasure will translate to a love of reading.

  3. Sight 4 Kidz - Free Vision Screening

    There will be state of the art equipment operated by trained screeners. The equipment will be able to detect up to six types of vision issues. This is for children six months of age and older. No appointment is necessary, but parents/guardians will need to be present to complete required forms. Sponsored by Lions Club of North Dakota

  4. LEGO Club for Kids

    Children ages 8+ meet to build with LEGO bricks. Junior Makers ages 5-7 are welcome with a caregiver. The Library has a collection of LEGO bricks and minifigures for children to use. Please leave your own bricks and minifigures at home. No snacks are allowed during LEGO Club, but covered drinks are welcome.

  5. Sensory Story Time

    This story time is for children with sensory integration issues and their peers. A combination of books, songs, movement, and heavy work activities will be included in the programs. This story time uses a predictable routine and many visual supports. This story time will be presented by staff member Kris Ronningen, a retired Early Childhood Special Education teacher.
